Gold rate in Sri Lanka by karat (LKR)
Same prices in U.S. dollars
| Karat | Per pavan (8 g) | Per gram | Per troy ounce |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | $1,100.00 | $137.50 | $4,276.72 |
| 22K | $1,009.38 | $126.17 | $3,924.39 |
One pavan, eight grams, and converting a price
Sri Lankan jewelers price gold per pavan, a unit of exactly 8 grams, and the everyday quote is for 22 karat. The word comes from “pound,” because the unit grew out of the British gold sovereign, which was known as a pound and weighs just under 8 grams.
| Item | Weight |
|---|---|
| 1 pavan | 8 g |
| Half pavan | 4 g |
| British sovereign coin | 7.988 g gross, 7.322 g fine gold |
| 1 troy ounce | about 3.89 pavan |
| 1 tola | about 1.46 pavan |
So a pavan of 22K gold is not a sovereign coin, even though the names are used loosely. The coin has slightly less metal, and its value includes a coin premium.
Why 8 grams and not 7.988
Jewelers rounded the sovereign’s weight to a clean 8 g long ago, and the rounded figure became the trade standard. The difference is 0.012 g per pavan, too small to matter on a ring but about 0.6 g on a 50-pavan wedding set. Receipts in grams remove any doubt about which pavan was used.
More on the coin itself is on the British gold sovereign page.
Converting a pavan price by hand
- Start from the dollar price per troy ounce.
- Divide by 31.1035 and multiply by 8 for dollars per pavan of pure gold (equivalent to multiplying by 0.2572).
- Multiply by 0.916 for a 22K pavan.
- Multiply by the rupee rate to get LKR.
With an example $3,000 per ounce, a pure-gold pavan is worth about $771.6 and a 22K pavan about $706.8. Multiply by the day’s rupee rate for the local figure. Colombo shop rates add a margin and, for jewelry, labor.
The ounce figure to start from is the gold price per ounce today.
Worked example: a 3-pavan chain
At an example 22K rate of Rs 200,000 per pavan (illustration only), 3 pavan of metal costs Rs 600,000. An example labor charge of 8% adds Rs 48,000, for Rs 648,000 before any tax. If the chain is sold back at an example 3% below the shop’s rate, the metal returns about Rs 582,000, so the round trip costs the labor plus that spread.
24K and 22K on the same board
Shops post both. The 22K pavan should be close to 91.6% of the 24K pavan; if the gap is much wider, the 22K rate includes more margin. Most jewelry is 22K, while 24K is sold as small bars and coins.
Sea Street, wedding gold and auspicious times
Colombo’s gold trade centers on Sea Street in Pettah, where jewelers post daily 22K and 24K rates per pavan. Newspapers and websites report the Sea Street figures, and jewelers in Kandy, Jaffna and Galle usually quote close to them.
The rupee’s path matters as much as the metal. After the currency was floated in March 2022, during the economic crisis, local gold prices jumped far faster than the dollar price. When the rupee recovered part of its value, local rates fell even on days when world gold was firm. Anyone tracking Sri Lankan gold is really tracking two prices at once.
Reading a newspaper gold report
Daily reports usually give 24K and 22K prices per pavan, sometimes per gram too, and may show separate buying and selling columns. The buying column is what dealers pay for gold brought to them; the selling column is what they charge. Headlines quoting a “gold price” without saying which column or karat are not enough to value your own jewelry.
Regulation and taxes
The National Gem and Jewellery Authority oversees the gem and jewelry industry. Import rules and taxes on gold have been changed several times since 2022, including limits on how much gold travelers can bring in, so check current rules with Sri Lanka Customs before buying abroad.
Wedding gold, the thali and auspicious times
For Tamil Hindu weddings the thali, a gold pendant tied around the bride’s neck by the groom, is the central piece, and families often buy it in 22K along with bangles and a chain. Sinhala weddings also call for substantial gold sets, and Muslim brides receive gold as part of the marriage gifts.
- Many Sinhala families time purchases and ceremonies by nakath, auspicious times set by astrologers.
- The April New Year season is a traditional time for gifts and family visits.
- Wedding seasons create peaks in demand that can widen shop margins.
- Families often buy over months to spread the price risk.
- Muslim marriage gifts to the bride commonly include gold jewelry.
Kerala and Tamil Nadu use the same 8-gram pavan, so Sri Lankans comparing with South Indian prices can compare unit for unit. The Indian rate includes duty and GST; see the India gold rate.
Pawning gold in Sri Lanka
Gold pawning through banks and licensed pawn centers is one of the most common sources of short-term credit in Sri Lanka. The lender quotes an advance per pavan, which is always below the selling rate, and publishes it much like a shop publishes its gold rate.
- The article is weighed and the purity is tested.
- Stones, clasps and non-gold parts are deducted to reach net gold weight.
- The net weight in pavan is multiplied by the lender’s advance rate for that karat.
- Interest accrues monthly until the article is redeemed; unredeemed items can be auctioned.
Before you pawn
- Compare the advance per pavan and the monthly interest rate at more than one lender.
- Ask how the lender tests purity and whether stones are deducted.
- Read the redemption period and what happens at auction.
- Keep the pawn ticket safe; it is your proof of ownership.
Why the advance changes
Lenders set the advance per pavan as a share of the market value, so when gold or the rupee moves sharply, advances are revised too. A borrower whose gold was pawned before a big fall may be asked to top up or redeem early. Compare the advance with the market value using the 22K gold price.
Buying tips and a short glossary
- Ask for the rate per pavan and per gram so you can compare shops.
- Get the labor charge listed separately from metal.
- Check the 22K or 916 stamp and the weight on the receipt.
- Ask what the shop will pay if you sell back, not just what it charges.
For per-gram maths in dollars, use the gold price per gram.
Selling back in Colombo
Jewelers buy at their buying rate for the tested karat, and labor is not refunded. Pieces from the same shop with the original receipt are usually easier to sell. Heavily stone-set jewelry is worth only its net gold weight to most buyers.
Carrying Sri Lankan gold to the U.S.
Sri Lankan-Americans returning with wedding jewelry should list it on the CBP declaration, gifts included, and keep receipts that show weight and karat. Value above the personal exemption may be dutiable; CBP’s current guidance has the details.
