Pricing gold in dinars and fils
Kuwait quotes gold in dinars per gram, and because the dinar is the highest-valued currency unit in the world, the numbers look small and run to three decimals. One dinar is 1,000 fils, so a quote such as 25.480 means 25 dinars and 480 fils.
The dinar replaced the Gulf rupee in 1961. Unlike its Gulf neighbors, Kuwait does not peg to the dollar alone: it was tied to the dollar between 2003 and 2007, and since May 2007 it has been managed against an undisclosed basket of currencies. The dollar weighs heavily in that basket, but the gold rate in KWD can drift slightly when the dollar moves against the euro or yen.
Karats you’ll find in Kuwait City
| Karat | Stamp | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 999 | Bars, coins, gifts |
| 22K | 916 | South Asian jewelry counters |
| 21K | 875 | Traditional Kuwaiti sets |
| 18K | 750 | Diamond and designer pieces |
What the basket means for gold
If the dollar weakens against the euro, the basket lets the dinar strengthen a little against the dollar. A gold rally driven by dollar weakness therefore shows up slightly smaller in dinars than in the dollar-pegged riyal or dirham. The effect is modest day to day, but over a year it can separate the Kuwaiti gold chart from its Gulf neighbors by a few percent.
From the dollar ounce to dinars per gram
Because there is no fixed peg, the conversion needs the day’s exchange rate:
- Take the international price in dollars per ounce.
- Multiply by the number of dinars per dollar (a figure around 0.3).
- Divide by 31.1035 for dinars per gram of pure gold.
- Multiply by the karat fraction and round to three decimals.
| Karat | KWD per gram |
|---|---|
| 24K | 29.611 |
| 22K | 27.124 |
| 21K | 25.910 |
| 18K | 22.208 |
These are illustrations of the method. The table higher on the page uses the live rates, and the dollar input is the current gold price per ounce.
Kuwaiti shops generally round to the nearest fils or five fils per gram. On a small ring the rounding does not matter, but on a heavy set it can add up to a dinar or two, so compare totals rather than rounded per-gram figures when the difference between two shops is tiny.
The three-decimal trap
With fils in play, a misplaced zero matters. 25.480, 25.48 and 25.048 look alike on a phone screen but the last one is 432 fils lower per gram. On 50 g that is more than 21 dinars. Read the digits after the point carefully when comparing shops or screenshots.
The gold shops of Mubarakiya and the malls
The old gold market around Souq Al-Mubarakiya remains the traditional place to compare prices, while newer jewelers cluster in the large malls. Shops post rates for 21K, 22K and 18K and charge labor on top.
- Kuwait has not introduced VAT, so the bill is mainly metal and workmanship. Check current rules if this changes.
- Ask for the price in fils per gram for the metal and the labor, not just a total.
- Heavier plain pieces carry lower labor per gram than fine chains.
- Gold-set pieces with stones should show a separate stone value.
For the purity math behind the most common Kuwaiti karat, see the 21K gold price.
Who is buying
Kuwaiti families buy heavy 21K sets for weddings and Eid, while the large Indian, Egyptian, Filipino and other expatriate communities buy in their own preferred karats. That mix is why most counters carry three or four purities side by side.
Bars for savings
Small 24K bars and coins are sold alongside jewelry. With no VAT and little labor, their price sits close to the metal value, and they resell at close to the buying rate. For a family saving in gold rather than wearing it, the difference in round-trip cost between a bar and a heavily worked necklace can be large.
Converting a Kuwaiti quote into rupees
Many buyers in Kuwait are comparing with prices back in India. The steps:
- Take the Kuwaiti 22K price per gram in KWD.
- Multiply by the rupee rate you will actually get from an exchange house.
- Multiply by 10 to compare with an Indian 10-gram rate.
- Remember that the Indian price already includes customs duty, and that India’s baggage rules limit duty-free jewelry.
With the example 22K figure from the table above, 27.124 dinars per gram, and an example exchange rate of 280 rupees per dinar, the gram works out to about ₹7,595, or ₹75,947 per 10 grams. Those numbers only illustrate the method.
Indian quotes are usually per 10 grams; our 10-gram gold rate shows the same unit in dollars.
The full explanation of duty and GST is on the India gold rate page.
Gold or a remittance?
Workers often weigh carrying gold home against sending money through an exchange house. A remittance has a fee and an exchange spread but no customs limit. Carried jewelry avoids the transfer cost but is subject to the home country’s baggage allowance, and anything above it pays that country’s import duty. For large amounts, the duty usually outweighs the transfer cost, so the comparison should be done before buying.
The same idea for other home currencies
Egyptian workers compare with Cairo’s 21K rate, Filipino workers with per-gram 18K rates in Manila. The method is identical: convert the Kuwaiti gram price at the rate you can actually get, then compare the same karat. The dinar’s high value means small exchange differences move the result noticeably.
Selling in Kuwait, and a short glossary
Shops buy back at a rate below their selling rate and keep the labor you paid. If the piece has no invoice or a worn stamp, expect it to be tested first.
Mistakes that cost money
- Comparing a 24K rate with 21K jewelry. The purity gap is 12.5% of the metal.
- Reading 25.48 and 25.048 as the same price.
- Converting at the headline exchange rate instead of the one an exchange house actually pays.
- Paying high labor on gold meant as savings rather than for wear.
Glossary
- Fils: one-thousandth of a dinar.
- Basket peg: the dinar’s link to a mix of currencies rather than to the dollar alone.
- Workmanship: the labor charge, usually per gram.
- 875: the stamp for 21K, Kuwait’s traditional jewelry purity.
- Zakat House: Kuwait’s government zakat body, founded in 1982.
- Mubarakiya: the old souq district where the traditional gold shops are.
Zakat in Kuwait
Kuwait has a government zakat body, the Zakat House, established in 1982, which collects and distributes zakat and answers questions on how to calculate it. Many families use its guidance for gold, since the treatment of jewelry that is worn rather than stored differs between schools of thought. The usual rate is 2.5% of the value of gold above the nisab.
Carrying Kuwaiti gold to the U.S.
Americans working in Kuwait or visiting family should keep invoices and list every purchase on the CBP declaration when they land. Value above the personal exemption may be dutiable, and CBP publishes current guidance for returning residents.
For neighboring riyal quotes, see the Saudi gold rate.
Other currencies are on the gold price by country list.
