Vori, ana and rati on both sides of the border

Gold in Bangladesh is sold by the vori (also spelled bhori), which weighs the same as a tola, 11.664 grams. Smaller pieces are weighed in ana and rati, and a receipt may read something like “1 vori 4 ana 2 rati.”

Converting a mixed weight to grams

1. Multiply the vori by 11.664: 1 vori is 11.664 g.
2. Multiply the ana by 0.729: 4 ana is 2.916 g.
3. Multiply the rati by 0.1215: 2 rati is 0.243 g.
4. Add them up: 1 vori 4 ana 2 rati is about 14.82 g.

Going the other way, divide grams by 11.664 to get vori. A 10 g chain is about 0.857 vori, or 13 ana and 4 rati.

Grams on the scale, vori on the receipt

Modern jewelers’ scales read in grams, and the shop converts to vori, ana and rati for the customer. Ask to see the gram reading as well. Rounding a weight to the nearest rati costs or saves only a few hundred taka, but a mistake in the ana figure is worth much more, so a gram figure on the receipt is the simplest check.

Bhori across the border in West Bengal

Kolkata jewelers use the same unit, spelled bhori, and the same 22K purity, so shoppers in both countries often compare. The comparison needs care. Indian jewelry carries 3% GST and an import duty built into the rate, while Bangladeshi jewelry carries VAT and the BAJUS making charge. Indian pieces sold since 2021 also carry a BIS hallmark with a unique HUID code, which makes purity easy to confirm.

Converting between the two

Take the Indian 10-gram 22K price, multiply by 1.1664 for one bhori, and convert rupees to taka at the rate you can actually get. The result is the Kolkata price in taka for the same weight, before labor, and can be compared directly with the BAJUS 22K rate.

For example, an Indian 22K rate of ₹95,000 per 10 g (illustration only) becomes about ₹110,808 per bhori. At an example 1.4 taka per rupee, that is about Tk 155,131. Labor, VAT or GST and any duty on carrying the piece home then need adding on each side.

How BAJUS fixes the vori price, and where the gold comes from

The Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) publishes the national rate per vori for 22K, 21K and 18K, plus a cheaper traditional-method grade. It revises the rate when the local market for pure gold moves, which can mean several changes in a busy month. Each notice states the date and time from which the new rate applies.

BAJUS notices usually state that VAT and a making charge are added to the listed rate. The percentages have changed over the years, so check the current notice rather than relying on an old figure.

Reading a Dhaka jewelry bill

1. Convert the weight to vori (grams ÷ 11.664).
2. Multiply by the BAJUS rate for that karat.
3. Add the making charge, usually a percentage of metal value.
4. Add VAT on the total as stated on the notice.

Worked example: a 2-vori 22K necklace

At an example 22K rate of Tk 150,000 per vori (illustration only), 2 vori of metal costs Tk 300,000. An example making charge of 6% adds Tk 18,000, and an example VAT of 5% on the subtotal adds Tk 15,900, for a total of Tk 333,900. Where Bangladesh’s gold comes from

For years most gold entered Bangladesh in travelers’ baggage under the passenger rules, rather than through formal imports. Bangladesh Bank’s Gold Policy of 2018 created a licensed route, allowing authorized dealers to import gold directly. Baggage gold still matters, especially around the peak wedding months, and the duty on it feeds straight into local supply costs.

That structure explains two things about the BAJUS rate. It moves with the dollar price and the taka, but also with how much gold is arriving through baggage, which depends partly on travel seasons and on the duty charged at the airport. And it tends to sit above the converted international price, because every route into the country carries a cost.

The currency adds another layer. The taka lost a large part of its value against the dollar between 2022 and 2024, which pushed the local vori price up much faster than the international price. For a Bangladeshi saver, gold rose in taka terms even in months when it was flat in dollars.

Rules for returning travelers

Passengers arriving in Dhaka, Chattogram or Sylhet face limits on duty-free jewelry and on how many bars they can bring with duty paid. Those limits have been revised in recent budgets, so check current rules with the National Board of Revenue before buying abroad.

Selling, exchanging and buying for weddings

• Jewelers apply a percentage deduction when they buy back or exchange old gold. BAJUS sets guidance on this; ask for the figure first.
• Older pieces may be lower purity than the stamp suggests. Expect a test before an offer.
• Stones and lac are removed from the weight.
• A 1 vori bar or coin is the easiest form to resell.

Seasons and customs

Weddings and the two Eids are the busiest buying periods, with the winter wedding season the heaviest. Hindu families buy for weddings and for Durga Puja. Bridal sets are traditionally 22K, though 21K and 18K have grown as prices rose, because they give a bigger-looking piece for the same money.

Coins and small bars

Jewelers also sell coins and small bars in vori and gram sizes, stamped 22K or 24K. They carry little or no making charge beyond a small premium, so they are the cheapest way to hold gold as savings, and they are the easiest items to sell back at close to the published rate. Gifts at weddings and births are often given in this form.

Mistakes to avoid, and a short glossary

• Using an old BAJUS notice. Check the date and time on it.
• Comparing a rate without VAT and making charge with a final bill that includes both.
• Treating the traditional-method grade as 22K. It is priced lower because it is lower purity.
• Forgetting that gram-based foreign quotes need converting to vori before comparing.
