Nepal’s daily quotes and the units behind them

Nepal’s official gold price is announced each business day by the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association (FENEGOSIDA), per tola and per 10 grams. The notice lists two gold grades, hallmarked fine gold (9999) and tejabi gold, plus silver. Newspapers, radio and jewelers’ boards across Kathmandu, Pokhara and the Terai all carry the same figures.

Fine gold is the reference for bars and for anyone valuing savings. Tejabi is a lower-purity grade used for traditional ornaments, and it is always quoted below fine gold. Because the two are published side by side, the gap between them tells you roughly how much a jeweler’s standard ornament gold is discounted for purity.

Why the Nepali rate sits above the converted price

• Gold enters Nepal through commercial banks under a quota overseen by Nepal Rastra Bank, and customs duty is paid on it before it reaches dealers.
• The Nepali rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee at 1.6 NPR per INR, so the dollar exchange rate reaches Kathmandu through India.
• Limited supply before festivals can widen the premium for a few weeks, since the import quota does not expand with demand.
• Transport and insurance from the border points add a small cost to every tola.

The converted figure at the top of this page leaves those costs out on purpose. Comparing it with the FENEGOSIDA rate shows how much duty and scarcity add on a given day.

Tola and gram equivalents used in Nepal

From a 10-gram quote to a tola

1. Take the FENEGOSIDA price per 10 grams.
2. Divide by 10 for the gram price.
3. Multiply by 11.6638 for the tola price.
4. Add the jeweler’s making charge (jyala) for ornaments.

With an example 10-gram rate of Rs 200,000 (illustration only), the gram is Rs 20,000 and the tola about Rs 233,276. If the two figures in a news report do not keep that ratio, one of them has not been updated.

The same notice gives silver per tola and per 10 grams. Silver matters in Nepal for Tihar gifts, puja utensils and anklets, and it follows the same unit logic, so the conversion steps above work for it too.

The rupee peg and the Indian comparison

Because 1 Indian rupee is fixed at 1.6 Nepali rupees, an Indian quote converts to Nepali terms with a single multiplication. An example Indian rate of ₹100,000 per 10 grams equals NPR 160,000 per 10 grams. The FENEGOSIDA rate for the same day is usually a little higher, reflecting Nepal’s own duty and the tight import quota.

For readers in the Terai the comparison is practical, since the open border makes Indian towns a short trip away. Two things narrow the apparent saving. Nepal’s customs rules limit how much gold can come back across the border without duty, and Indian jewelry already includes 3% GST, which a Nepali buyer cannot reclaim. Check current rules on both sides before a large purchase.

Shoppers also forget the exchange cost. Indian rupees bought in Nepal for the trip are exchanged near the 1.6 rate, but card payments and money changers can add a spread. On a large purchase, a small spread can cancel much of the price difference.

Hallmarks on either side of the border

Indian jewelry sold since 2021 carries a BIS hallmark and a six-character HUID code, which makes its purity easy to verify. Nepali fine gold is quoted as hallmarked 9999, while tejabi ornaments rely on the jeweler’s stamp and reputation. A piece bought in India can be tested in Kathmandu like any other.

Festivals, weddings and buying jewelry in Nepal

Demand clusters around Dashain and Tihar in the autumn. Dhanteras falls during Tihar, and buying gold or silver that day, before Laxmi Puja, is considered auspicious. During Teej, women traditionally dress in red and wear their finest gold, so the weeks before Teej are busy for jewelers too.

Ornaments with meaning

• The tilhari, a gold pendant worn on strands of glass beads, is a sign of marriage in many hill communities.
• The mangalsutra is common among families in the Terai.
• Gold earrings and nose ornaments are part of traditional bridal sets in many regions.
• Coins and small bars are given at naming ceremonies and weddings as savings for the child or couple.

Most of these pieces are made in tejabi gold rather than fine gold, which keeps them strong enough to wear. The wedding season in winter and spring adds steady demand, and families often buy a little at a time through the year so that a single rate spike does not decide the cost of the whole set.

Buying jewelry in Nepal: jyala, tejabi and receipts

A Nepali jewelry bill has three parts: the gold weight in tola or grams, the day’s rate for the grade used, and the jyala, the jeweler’s making charge. Stone-set pieces add the value of the stones separately.

Worked example: a 1.5-tola tejabi necklace

Take an example tejabi rate of Rs 220,000 per tola (for illustration only). The metal in 1.5 tola is worth Rs 330,000. An example jyala of Rs 25,000 brings the price to Rs 355,000 before any tax. The same weight in fine gold would cost more for the metal but is too soft for most ornament designs.

Checks before paying

• Ask which grade the piece is made from and get it written on the receipt.
• Ask for the weight in both tola and grams.
• Get the jyala stated separately from the metal value.
• Ask how the shop values the piece if you exchange it later.

Tax on gold sales in Nepal has changed over time, so check current rules on VAT and any other charges with the seller. For bars and coins, the fine gold rate tracks the 24K gold price once duty is added.

Migrant workers, selling gold and a short glossary

Hundreds of thousands of Nepalis work in the Gulf and Malaysia, and many bring gold home for weddings. Nepal’s customs allowance for returning workers sets how much jewelry can enter without duty; above it, the full duty applies. Buying abroad saves money only when the purchase fits inside that limit.

When you sell, dealers pay below the FENEGOSIDA rate for the grade they assess. Old ornaments are tested, and the jyala you paid is not returned. Fine gold bars resell closest to the published rate.
