Why Dubai gold tracks the world price so closely

Dubai’s gold rate follows the international price almost one-for-one because the dirham has been fixed at 3.6725 per U.S. dollar for decades. There is no floating currency to add noise, and the city is one of the world’s biggest wholesale hubs, so bars move in and out constantly.

The dirham has been officially fixed at that rate since 1997. For a shopper this means one useful shortcut: the 24K price per gram in dirhams is the dollar ounce price multiplied by about 0.1181 (3.6725 ÷ 31.1035). If the world price rises by $10 an ounce, the 24K gram rises by roughly 1.18 dirhams.

The daily per-gram rates you see on shop boards in the Deira Gold Souk are published by the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group for four purities. Shops then add their own making charge, and since 1 January 2018 jewelry sales have carried 5% VAT.

The four karats on the rate board

KaratStampTypical buyer
24K999 / 995Bars and coins, investors
22K916Indian and Pakistani wedding sets
21K875Arab-style bangles and necklaces
18K750Diamond-set and Italian designs

The ten-tola bar

Alongside gram bars, Dubai sells the TT bar, a ten-tola bar of 116.64 g, because so many buyers come from tola-using countries. It is a standard wholesale item across the Gulf and South Asia. Our tola price page converts the dollar price into that unit.

What a Dubai jewelry bill looks like

Two shops using the same board rate can quote very different totals. Making charges vary per gram and per design, and heavy plain bangles cost far less in labor than filigree or stone-set pieces.

Worked example: a 20 g 22K necklace

  1. Take an example 22K board rate of AED 300 per gram (illustration only).
  2. Metal value: 20 × 300 = AED 6,000.
  3. Add an example making charge of AED 15 per gram: AED 300.
  4. Subtotal AED 6,300; add 5% VAT of AED 315.
  5. Total: AED 6,615.

Ask for the metal value, the making charge and VAT on separate lines. That is the only way to compare two shops fairly. Stones are priced on their own and are not gold weight, so a stone-heavy piece should show a lower gold weight than its total weight.

Tourist VAT refunds

Visitors can claim VAT back on eligible purchases through the airport refund system when leaving the country. How gold jewelry is treated under the scheme should be confirmed with the shop at the time of purchase, before you pay.

Buying seasons matter less to the price than people think. The Dubai Shopping Festival, running from December into January, brings promotions and raffles, and Akshaya Tritiya and Diwali fill Indian jewelers’ counters. The board rate still moves with the world price that morning.

Taking Dubai gold home and comparing in rupees

Buying gold in Dubai is legal and routine. Getting it home is the part people skip reading about.

  1. Keep the invoice. It should show weight, karat, metal value and labor.
  2. List every item acquired abroad on your CBP declaration, including jewelry you are wearing.
  3. Returning U.S. residents usually have an $800 personal exemption; value above that may be dutiable at a rate that depends on how the item is classified.
  4. There is no dollar limit on the gold you can bring into the U.S., but it must be declared, and items from sanctioned origins are prohibited.
  5. Customs rules change, so read CBP’s current traveler guidance before the trip.

Compare the dirham figure with the gold price today in dollars and you will see how little the peg changes the number.

Buying for India or Pakistan instead

Many buyers are carrying gold to South Asia, not America. Those countries set their own baggage allowances, and anything above them pays import duty on arrival. The saving that looked large at the souk can disappear. See the Indian gold rate for how duty is built into prices there.

Dubai’s wider gold trade, and prices in rupees

The souk is the visible end of a much larger business. The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) sets the Dubai Good Delivery standard for bars, and a large share of the gold moving between Africa, Europe and South Asia passes through the emirate’s refiners and vaults. That depth of supply is one reason retail premiums on plain bars stay thin.

Gold outside Dubai

Sharjah’s Central Souk, known for its blue-tiled roof, has many jewelers, and Abu Dhabi has its own gold market. The rate board is the same across the emirates, so price differences come down to labor and shop policy.

Converting a Dubai price into Indian rupees

  1. Take the Dubai 22K rate per gram in dirhams.
  2. Multiply by the rupees you receive per dirham from a money changer.
  3. Multiply by 10 to compare with a 10-gram Indian quote.
  4. Add the Indian duty you would pay on anything above the baggage allowance.

At an example rate of 25 rupees per dirham, an example AED 300 gram becomes ₹7,500, or ₹75,000 per 10 grams. The Indian board rate for the same day will usually be higher because it already includes duty; whether buying in Dubai saves money depends on how much of the purchase fits inside the allowance.

Investment bars and VAT

The UAE treats investment-grade gold differently from jewelry for VAT purposes, and the rules for business-to-business trade in bullion have been adjusted since VAT arrived. A private buyer of a small bar should ask the seller how VAT is applied and check current rules for larger amounts.

Selling back, checking purity and common mistakes

Selling in Dubai is as routine as buying. Shops buy back at a rate below the board price, and many will exchange old jewelry for new at a smaller deduction than a cash sale.

How a buyback is priced

  1. The shop checks the stamp and tests the piece, often with an XRF analyzer.
  2. Stones and non-gold parts are deducted to reach net weight.
  3. Net weight is multiplied by the shop’s buying rate for that karat.
  4. Labor you paid originally is not refunded, and VAT is not returned on a resale.

Stamps you will see

UAE jewelry carries fineness stamps such as 750, 875, 916 and 999, often alongside the maker’s mark. Pieces made elsewhere may carry their own country’s hallmark, for example an Indian BIS mark on 22K sets sold by Indian chains. A missing stamp is a reason to ask for a test before paying.

If you plan to resell quickly, the round trip costs you the making charge, the VAT and the buyback spread, even if gold has not moved at all.

Checks and common mistakes at the Gold Souk

  • Comparing a price “per gram including making” in one shop with a bare board rate in another.
  • Forgetting that 21K and 22K differ in gold content by about 4%.
  • Not asking for the buyback policy. Many shops exchange at a small deduction but buy back for cash at a larger one.
  • Assuming airport duty-free gold is cheaper than the souk. Compare per gram and per karat first.

For purity maths, the 21K gold price page shows the dollar value of the most common Arab karat.

Arabic readers can use the UAE gold rate in Arabic.
