The Iraqi mithqal and other mithqals

Iraqi jewelers quote gold per mithqal, and in Iraq’s markets that unit is a round 5 grams. That is heavier than the classical mithqal used in Islamic law, and it is not the same as the Iranian mesghal, so be careful when comparing quotes across borders.

One troy ounce equals about 6.22 Iraqi mithqals, and 10 mithqals are 50 g. A quote per mithqal is simply five times the gram price, which makes switching between the two easy once you remember the unit is fixed at 5 g.

Why the difference matters

A family near the Iranian border, or a pilgrim comparing prices in Karbala and Mashhad, may see two “mithqal” prices that differ by about 8% for no reason other than the unit. Always ask for the price per gram as well.

Dinar rates and the mithqal quote

The Central Bank of Iraq cut the dinar’s official value to 1,450 per dollar in December 2020, then raised it to 1,300 in February 2023. The street rate has often sat above the official one, and gold dealers price from the dollar they can actually buy, so local quotes can be higher than a conversion at the official rate.

Calculating a mithqal price yourself

  1. Divide the dollar ounce price by 31.1035 for dollars per gram.
  2. Multiply by 5 for dollars per mithqal of pure gold.
  3. Multiply by 0.875 for 21K or 0.75 for 18K.
  4. Multiply by the dinar rate you would really pay for a dollar.

Worked example

At an example $3,000 per ounce and an example market rate of 1,500 dinars per dollar: $3,000 ÷ 31.1035 = $96.45 per gram; × 5 = $482.26 per mithqal; × 0.875 = $421.98 for 21K; × 1,500 = about IQD 632,970 per 21K mithqal before labor. Using the official 1,300 instead would give about IQD 548,570, which shows how much the choice of dinar rate moves the answer.

The dollar starting point is the live gold price per ounce.

Measuring the local premium

Divide a shop’s 21K mithqal price in dinars by the figure you get using the official rate. A result of 1.00 means the shop is pricing at the official dinar; 1.10 means the local price is 10% higher, whether because of the street dollar rate, local demand or the shop’s margin. Doing the same sum with the street rate tells you how much of that 10% is currency and how much is premium.

Dollars on the counter

Iraq’s economy uses a lot of U.S. dollar cash, and for large purchases some dealers think in dollars first. If a shop quotes in dollars, agree on the dinar rate before paying in dinars, or you may be paying a hidden premium on the currency as well as on the gold. Carrying large amounts of cash has its own risks, so bank transfers are safer for big purchases where available.

Mahr in mithqals: a worked example

Iraqi marriage contracts often state the mahr, the bride’s marital gift, in mithqals of gold rather than in dinars. Gold protects its value when the currency weakens, which Iraqis have seen more than once.

  1. A contract names 100 mithqals of 21K gold.
  2. That is 100 × 5 = 500 g of 21K jewelry.
  3. The pure gold content is 500 × 0.875 = 437.5 g.
  4. In troy ounces, 437.5 ÷ 31.1035 = about 14.07 oz.

Multiply the ounce figure by the international price and the dinar rate and you have the metal value of the mahr on any given day, before workmanship. For the purity math in dollars, see the 21K gold price.

21 karat and 18 karat in Iraqi shops

21K is the everyday standard for Iraqi jewelry, with 18K used mostly for lighter imported designs and diamond pieces. Plain 24K bars are bought mainly as savings, and dealers in the Kurdistan Region quote in the same dinars and mithqals as Baghdad.

The “English lira”

Across Iraq and the Levant, the British sovereign is widely known as the English lira. It weighs 7.988 g of 22K gold and holds 7.322 g of pure gold, about 1.46 Iraqi mithqals. Older generations still think of it as the standard gold coin, and it trades close to its metal value plus a small premium. Details of the coin are on the British gold sovereign page.

Buying seasons

Weddings and the two Eids drive most purchases, and heavy 21K sets remain the norm for brides. Demand also rises when the dinar looks shaky, since households treat gold as protection against the currency. That kind of buying tends to push the local premium up just when the dinar rate is already moving, so quotes can jump for two reasons at once.

What Iraqi buyers check, plus a glossary

  • Check for the 875 or 750 stamp and ask whether the piece is local or imported work.
  • Labor is charged per mithqal or per gram; confirm which before comparing.
  • When selling, dealers pay close to metal value and keep the labor.
  • Ask for weight in grams as well as mithqals on the receipt.
  • Confirm which dinar rate the shop is using if it quotes in dollars first.

Iraqi-made jewelry is normally stamped with its karat, while pieces imported from the Gulf or Turkey carry their makers’ marks, such as 875 or 21K. A worn or missing stamp is not proof of a problem, but it is a reason to have the piece tested before paying a full 21K rate.

For gram-based comparisons, our gold price per gram gives the dollar reference.

Selling gold in Iraq step by step

  1. The dealer checks the stamp and tests the gold if the piece is old or foreign.
  2. Stones and fittings are subtracted to get the gold weight in mithqals.
  3. The dealer applies his buying rate for that karat, which sits below his selling rate.
  4. Agree the currency and exchange rate before accepting payment.

Common mistakes

The most frequent is mixing units: applying a price per Iranian mesghal or classical mithqal to a 5 g Iraqi quote. The second is converting at the official rate when the shop is using the market rate. The third is treating the workmanship as recoverable; it is not, so jewelry bought as savings should carry as little labor as possible.

Bringing gold from Iraq to the U.S.

Iraqi-Americans returning from family visits often carry wedding jewelry. Every item acquired abroad goes on the CBP declaration, gifts included, and anything above the personal exemption may be dutiable. Keep invoices showing weight and karat, and check CBP’s current guidance before travel.
