About 21K gold

21 karat gold is 87.5% pure gold. It is the standard for jewelry across much of the Middle East and North Africa, so many U.S. buyers and sellers of Arabic and Persian jewelry deal in 21K.

21 karat in dollars: the gram, 10 grams and tola

21K gold is worth seven-eighths of the pure gold price: 21 ÷ 24 = 0.875, so a gram of 21K contains 0.875 gram of gold. In the U.S. it is priced the same way as any other karat, from the dollar spot price, even though the jewelry itself usually comes from the Middle East.

What changes is the unit. Shops in the Gulf and Egypt quote 21K per gram, families from South Asia and the Gulf often think in tolas, and American buyers quote in pennyweights or troy ounces. The table converts one into the others at a fixed example price so the ratios are easy to see.

Working from a tola

The tola used in gold trading is 11.6638 grams, which is three-eighths of a troy ounce. A 21K tola therefore holds a little over 10.2 grams of pure gold. The gold price per tola page gives the pure-gold figure that the 0.875 factor is applied to.

Turning an example into today’s number

Every figure above scales in a straight line with spot. Divide the current gold price by 3,000 and multiply any row by the result. If spot is at 3,600, for instance, the factor is 1.2 and a gram of 21K holds about $101 of gold.

People searching “875 gold” are asking the same question. 875 is simply 21 karat written in parts per thousand, the way European and many Middle Eastern hallmarks express it.

Where Americans come across 21K gold

Very little jewelry made for the American market is 21K. Most of what circulates here arrived with people: pieces bought in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt or elsewhere in the region, wedding gifts, and family sets passed down. Jewelry stores in U.S. communities with large Arab-American and Middle Eastern populations also stock 21K, because that is what their customers expect.

The appeal is color and gold content. 21K has a deep yellow that 14K can’t match, and in much of the region gold jewelry is bought partly as savings, so a higher karat makes sense.

Marks you’ll find on Gulf and Egyptian pieces

  • 21K or 21KT, in Western numerals.
  • 875, the thousandths equivalent.
  • The same numbers written in Arabic-Indic digits, which look different from Western numerals and are easy to miss if you don’t read them.
  • A maker’s or shop mark, and on many pieces an official assay or hallmark stamp from the country of origin.
  • On older or handmade pieces, sometimes no mark at all, in which case a jeweler’s test is the only reliable answer.

Why U.S. buyers sometimes quote 21K low

A counter used to 10K and 14K may not have a 21K line on its price board. Some buyers then test the piece as “18K or better” and pay the 18K rate. That costs the seller one-eighth of the gold value, since 18K is 75% gold and 21K is 87.5%. Ask the buyer to test for 21K specifically and to write the karat on the quote.

If you are comparing prices with the region itself, the gold price in the UAE shows how Dubai quotes 21K per gram in dirhams.

What “Saudi gold” means

In the Philippines and among Filipino families abroad, Saudi gold is the everyday name for jewelry bought in Saudi Arabia and neighboring Gulf states, usually by relatives working there. It is typically 18K or 21K, prized for its deep color and for holding value better than low-karat local jewelry. The name describes where it was bought, not a purity, so the stamp or a test still decides the price. A “Saudi gold” chain marked 750 is 18K and is priced at 75%, not at the 21K rate.

Making charges: the part of the price you don’t get back

In Gulf and Egyptian gold markets, the price of a piece is built from two parts. The first is the gold: the weight in grams times that day’s 21K rate. The second is a making charge, sometimes called workmanship, which covers the labor and the shop’s margin. It may be quoted per gram or per piece, and on intricate work it can be substantial.

When the piece is sold back, whether in the region or in the U.S., the buyer pays for the gold only. The making charge is not recovered. That is normal, not a sign of a bad deal, but it explains why a set bought recently can sell for noticeably less than the receipt.

Worked example: a 45-gram bangle set

  1. Weigh each bangle; together they come to 45 grams.
  2. Confirm the karat. If they are stamped 21K or 875, or test at that level, use 0.875.
  3. Pure gold content: 45 × 0.875 = 39.375 grams.
  4. At an example price of $3,000 per troy ounce, a gram of pure gold is about $96.45, so the gold is worth about $3,798.
  5. A buyer paying 85% of melt would offer about $3,228; one paying 75% would offer about $2,848.

Egypt runs one of the region’s biggest 21K markets, and its local pricing in pounds is on the gold price in Egypt page.

Hollow and filled pieces

Large, light-looking pieces from the region can be hollow, and some ornamental items contain a filler or have non-gold parts such as beads, enamel or stones. Weigh the piece rather than judging by size, and ask whether any part has been deducted from the weight in the quote.

21K next to 18K and 22K

The three high karats are close together, which makes them easy to confuse at a quick glance. The difference per gram is real money, though.

Gold content per 10 grams at an example price of $3,000 per troy ounce
KaratGold per 10 gExample value
18K (750)7.50 g$723.39
21K (875)8.75 g$843.96
22K (916)9.17 g$884.15

The Gulf standard of 21K and the South Asian standard of 22K developed side by side and are both widely worn across the region. For pieces from Indian or Pakistani jewelers, the 22K gold price page is the better match.

Wear and care

With only 12.5% of the alloy left for other metals, 21K is soft. Bangles go oval, thin chains stretch and prongs don’t hold stones as firmly as in 14K or 18K. That is one reason 21K jewelry in the region tends to be heavier and more solid, and why gem-set pieces are more often made in 18K. Repairs on 21K also need solder of a matching karat, otherwise the joint shows as a paler line and lowers the average fineness of the piece.

For daily wear, a heavy 21K piece holds up well. The metal just shows scratches sooner, and those scratches polish out more easily.

Quick glossary for 21K buyers and sellers

  • 875: the thousandths mark for 21 karat.
  • Making charge: the labor and margin added to the gold value at purchase, not refunded on resale.
  • Tola: 11.6638 grams, three-eighths of a troy ounce.
  • Melt value: weight × 0.875 × the pure gold price per gram.
