About the tola

The tola is a traditional South Asian unit equal to 11.6638 grams (0.375 troy ounce). It is still the standard unit for gold jewelry and bars in Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and the Gulf, and a 10-tola bar is a common size.

The tola in grams, ounces and rupee history

One tola of gold weighs 11.6638 grams, exactly 0.375 troy ounce. So the U.S. dollar price of 1 tola is simply the ounce price multiplied by 0.375, and the 22K tola price is that figure times 22/24.

The neat 0.375 ratio is no accident. Under British rule the tola was standardized at 180 grains, the weight of the silver rupee coin. A troy ounce is 480 grains, and 180 ÷ 480 is exactly 0.375. The same grain that underpins the troy ounce underpins the tola, which is why the conversion never produces a messy decimal.

India adopted the metric system officially in the late 1950s and now quotes gold per 10 grams, but the tola survived in everyday trade across Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and the Gulf. Families still describe wedding sets and savings in tolas, and dealers in those markets publish a daily tola rate.

Converting grams and tolas in both directions

Divide grams by 11.6638 to get tolas, and multiply tolas by 11.6638 to get grams. A few everyday cases:

  • A 45-gram 22K necklace is 45 ÷ 11.6638 = 3.86 tolas.
  • A pair of bangles quoted at 2.5 tolas weighs 2.5 × 11.6638 = 29.16 grams.
  • Half a tola is 5.83 grams, a little more than a 5-gram bar.
  • One troy ounce is 2.667 tolas, and one kilogram is 85.735 tolas.

Masha and ratti: the smaller traditional units

Jewelers who work in tolas often weigh small pieces in masha and ratti. The traditional scale is 12 masha to the tola and 8 ratti to the masha. Some markets use a slightly different ratti for jewelry, so confirm which one a shop uses before comparing bills.

Working out 1 tola and 10 tola gold in U.S. dollars

The math takes one line per karat. At an example price of $2,500 per troy ounce, not today’s quote:

  1. 24K per tola: $2,500 × 0.375 = $937.50.
  2. 22K per tola: $937.50 × 22/24 = $859.38.
  3. 21K per tola, the common Gulf jewelry karat: $937.50 × 21/24 = $820.31.
  4. A 10-tola bar holds 3.75 troy ounces: 3.75 × $2,500 = $9,375 in gold content.
  5. To get a local-currency parity price, multiply the dollar figure by the exchange rate. Local retail rates then add duties, taxes and dealer margins.

24K11.66 g$937.50
22K10.69 g$859.38
21K10.21 g$820.31
18K8.75 g$703.12

To get the real figure, replace $2,500 with today’s gold price per ounce and run the same lines. The table at the top of this page already does that for you.

The 10-tola bar

The 10-tola bar, known in Dubai’s bullion market as the TT bar, weighs 116.64 grams and is normally cast at 999 or 999.9 fineness. It is sized for the way South Asian buyers save: large enough to carry a low premium per tola, small enough to buy with a few months of savings. Outside South Asia and the Gulf it is uncommon, and a U.S. buyer may see a wider spread when selling one simply because fewer local dealers stock the size.

Reading a per-tola jewelry bill

A typical South Asian jewelry bill lists the weight in tolas or grams, the day’s gold rate for that karat, the making charge and any tax. To separate metal from labor, multiply the weight in tolas by the board rate for the karat. Whatever is left before tax is the making charge plus any wastage allowance. When the piece is sold later, the buyer pays for the metal only, so the labor portion of the original bill does not come back.

Why 22K is the tola rate most people want

Most jewelry sold in Pakistan, India and Nepal is 22K, so the 22K tola figure is the one that matches a jeweler’s board. The 22K gold price page gives per-gram and per-ounce values in that karat.

How tola rates are quoted from Karachi to Dubai

The international tola price on this page is a parity figure: what the gold is worth at the global spot price, converted to one tola. Each market builds its own board rate on top of that.

Pakistan

Rates are published daily per tola and per 10 grams for 24K and 22K gold, in rupees. The local figure follows the international price and the rupee exchange rate, plus a local premium that widens when imports are tight. Rupee rates and the latest local factors are on the gold price in Pakistan page.

Nepal

A dealers’ association announces a daily per-tola rate for fine gold and for tejabi gold, a lower-purity category used in traditional jewelry. Gold imports run through the banking system under official quotas, which is one reason the Nepali rate can sit above parity. See the gold price in Nepal page for the current board.

India and Bangladesh

India quotes per 10 grams, while Bangladesh jewelers still commonly quote per vori, a local name for the tola-sized unit. Buyers comparing across borders should convert everything to grams first.

The Gulf

Dubai jewelry shops price by the gram in dirhams for 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K, while bullion dealers keep the tola alive through the TT bar. In the UAE, jewelry carries 5% VAT, while investment gold of 99% purity or higher is zero-rated. Dirham prices are on the gold price in UAE page.

Mistakes that distort a tola comparison

  • Treating 10 grams as a tola. Ten grams is only 0.857 tola, so a per-10-gram rate looks about 14% cheaper than a tola rate for the same gold.
  • Comparing a jeweler’s bill with the metal price. Jewelry bills add making charges per tola or as a percentage, plus tax, and wastage charges in some shops.
  • Mixing karats. A 22K board rate set against a 24K international figure makes the local market look cheaper than it is.
  • Using the wrong exchange rate. Open-market and interbank rates can differ, and gold dealers in some countries price off the open-market rate.
  • Forgetting the grain basis when converting old records. A tola in older documents is 180 grains, the same 11.6638 grams used today.

When you sell tola jewelry in the United States, a U.S. buyer will weigh it in grams or pennyweights and test the karat. Expect the offer to be framed per gram or per pennyweight rather than per tola. One tola is exactly 7.5 pennyweights, which makes a quick check easy.

Tola market terms

  • Parity price: the international price converted to one tola and to local currency, before any local costs.
  • Board rate: the daily per-tola price a dealers’ association or market posts for its members.
  • Making charges: the jeweler’s labor fee, added per tola, per gram or as a percentage of the gold value.
  • Wastage: an allowance some jewelers add for metal lost in manufacturing, shown as a percentage.
  • Sarafa: the traditional bullion and jewelry market found in many South Asian cities, where board rates are set and traded.
