Gold in 2015: the year in review

Gold fell for a third straight year. In December 2015 the Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time since 2006, and gold hit its lowest levels in about six years around the same time.

In 2015, gold fell 10.4%, the 14th best result of the 15 calendar years since 2001. Its highest close, $1,300.70, came on January 22, and its lowest, $1,050.80, on December 17.

Gold finished higher in 4 of 12 months. The strongest month was January (+7.99%) and the weakest was November (−6.63%). The largest single-day gain of the year was 2.5% on January 15, and the largest drop was 2.7% on March 6.

Gold did not set a new record close in 2015; its best close was 31.1% below the record that stood at the time.
