Gold in 2019: the year in review

The Fed reversed course and cut rates three times, in July, September and October 2019. Trade tensions between the U.S. and China and heavy central-bank buying helped gold break out of a six-year range.

In 2019, gold rose 18.9%, the 7th best result of the 19 calendar years since 2001. Its highest close, $1,550.30, came on September 4, and its lowest, $1,269.30, on April 23.

Gold finished higher in 7 of 12 months. The strongest month was June (+7.96%) and the weakest was September (−3.52%). The largest single-day gain of the year was 3.6% on June 20, and the largest drop was 2.3% on September 5.
