About the 10 grams

Pricing 10 grams of gold in dollars

Ten grams of 24K gold is worth the troy-ounce price times 0.3215, or the per-gram price times ten. For 22K, multiply the result by 22/24.

Ten grams is the standard quote unit in India, and a dollar value for 10 grams is mostly useful for one job: comparing what gold costs in the United States with what it costs in Mumbai, Delhi or Chennai. It is the natural yardstick for anyone who buys jewelry in both countries, or who sends money home to relatives shopping for wedding gold.

A worked comparison

At an example price of $2,500 per troy ounce, which is a round number rather than today’s quote:

  1. 10 g of 24K: $2,500 × 0.3215 = $803.77.
  2. 10 g of 22K at the exact 22/24 ratio: $803.77 × 0.9167 = $736.79.
  3. 10 g of Indian hallmarked 22K916, which is 91.6% gold: 9.16 g × $80.38 = $736.25.
  4. Convert the 24K figure to rupees at the day’s exchange rate. That gives a parity price, what the gold is worth at the global price with no local costs added.
  5. Set the parity price against the Indian 10-gram rate. The difference is the local premium: customs duty, tax and dealer margin.

Replace $2,500 with the current gold price per ounce and the same five steps give a live comparison.

What sits between the dollar price and an Indian quote

  • Customs duty on imported gold, which India’s government revises from time to time in its budget.
  • Goods and services tax of 3% on the value of gold, plus a separate GST on making charges for jewelry.
  • A local premium or discount that swings with import demand, festival buying and the rupee.
  • City-to-city differences in the dealer association rates that jewelers post each morning.

Is gold cheaper in the U.S. or in India?

At the metal level, the Indian 10-gram rate normally sits above U.S. parity, because duty and GST are added to the international price. Jewelry is harder to compare. U.S. jewelry is mostly 14K and sold at retail markups with no posted daily rate, while Indian jewelry is mostly 22K and billed as metal value plus making charges. The fair comparison is grams of pure gold against a price per gram of pure gold, with every fee listed separately.

Rupee prices and the latest local factors are on the gold price in India page.

24K and 22K per 10 grams, and the hallmark numbers behind them

Indian jewelry carries a BIS hallmark that states purity in parts per thousand, and those numbers map directly onto a 10-gram price. The grade tells you how many grams of pure gold every 10 grams of the piece contains.

BIS hallmark grades and pure gold in every 10 grams, with example values at $2,500 per troy ounce
Hallmark gradePure gold per 10 gExample value per 10 g
24K9999.99 g$802.96
22K9169.16 g$736.25
18K7507.50 g$602.83
14K5855.85 g$470.21

Why 916 and not 917

Twenty-two divided by twenty-four is 0.91667. India’s standard rounds it down to 916, while some Gulf and European marks round up to 917. On 10 grams the gap is about 0.007 gram of gold, well under a dollar at typical prices. It matters only on large lots or when a buyer uses it as an excuse to shave an offer. The American Gold Eagle uses the full 91.67%. More on this purity is on the 22K gold price page.

Reading an Indian hallmark on a piece you own

Since hallmarking became mandatory, each piece carries three marks:

  • The BIS logo, a triangle-based symbol of the Bureau of Indian Standards.
  • The purity grade, such as 22K916 or 18K750.
  • A six-character alphanumeric HUID code that identifies the individual piece.

Older pieces may instead show a jeweler’s mark, a year letter and an assay center mark, or no hallmark at all. A U.S. buyer will test the metal regardless of stamps, but a clear 916 mark usually speeds up the process.

10 grams in ounces, tolas and pennyweights

Ten grams is a metric round number, so it never lines up neatly with the traditional units. Keep this table handy when a shop quotes in a different unit.

10 grams of gold in other weight units
Unit10 grams equalsWhere you’ll meet it
Troy ounces0.3215 ozU.S. bullion prices
Tola0.8574 tolaPakistan, Nepal, the Gulf
Pennyweights6.430 dwtU.S. jewelers and scrap buyers
Grains154.32 grVery small quantities
Avoirdupois ounces0.3527 ozKitchen and postal scales

The tola is the conversion people get wrong most often. One tola is 11.6638 grams, so 10 grams is a little under 86% of a tola. Our gold price per tola page gives the same live price in that unit.

The 10-gram bar next to a quarter-ounce coin

A 10-gram bar and a quarter-ounce coin look like similar purchases, but the bar holds 0.3215 troy ounce of gold against the coin’s 0.25 ounce. That is 28.6% more gold. When the two carry similar price tags, the difference is premium, not metal. Ten-gram bars are made by refiners in Switzerland, India and elsewhere, both as cheaper cast bars and as minted bars sealed in an assay card; size-by-size values are on the gold bar prices page.

Scaling from one gram up

Every figure on this page is ten times the per-gram price. If you already know the value of a gram, shift the decimal one place to the right. The gold price per gram page runs the same quote from 1 gram to 1 kilogram.

Common mix-ups with 10-gram quotes

  • Comparing a jeweler’s 10-gram bill with a metal price. Indian jewelry bills show the gold rate, a making charge per gram or as a percentage, and GST on top. Only the first line compares with the price here.
  • Comparing 24K abroad with 22K at home. Board rates in India are usually shown for both, and a 22K rate is about 8% lower for the same weight.
  • Reading 22K916 as 22K917 or the other way round, then arguing over a difference of a few cents.
  • Ignoring the exchange rate date. Rupee rates move during the day, so a morning rupee price and an afternoon dollar price don’t compare cleanly.
  • Assuming a U.S. buyer pays the 10-gram melt value. Scrap buyers pay a percentage of melt, whatever unit they quote in.

A quick sanity check covers most of these: convert everything to grams of pure gold, then multiply by one price per gram. If two quotes disagree after that, the difference is fees, tax or margin, and you can ask which.

10-gram quote terms

  • Board rate: the day’s gold rate per 10 grams posted by a city’s jewelers’ association.
  • Making charges: the labor fee on jewelry, billed per gram or as a percentage of the gold value.
  • HUID: the six-character hallmark code that identifies an individual piece of Indian jewelry.
  • Parity: the international price converted to 10 grams and local currency, with no local costs added.
