Gold in 2013: the year in review

Gold suffered one of its worst years in decades. On April 12 and April 15, 2013, it fell by roughly $200 an ounce across two trading sessions, and talk in May and June of the Fed slowing its bond purchases (the “taper tantrum”) pushed real interest rates higher.

In 2013, gold fell 28.2%, the worst result of the 13 calendar years since 2001. Its highest close, $1,692.80, came on January 22, and its lowest, $1,195.00, on December 19.

Gold finished higher in 3 of 12 months. The strongest month was July (+7.24%) and the weakest was June (−12.12%). The largest single-day gain of the year was 4.7% on September 19, and the largest drop was 9.4% on April 15.

Gold did not set a new record close in 2013; its best close was 10.4% below the record that stood at the time.
